Home Style: Living Room Inspiration
Last week, I said farewell to Utah and moved back to Idaho to be closer to my boyfriend and family. (Still working on the whole job situation.) The fact that I'm not headed back to Utah in a few days definitely hasn't completely sunk in yet...but I think it's because I still have to unpack everything, lol. It's a bittersweet feeling to be back after five years in Utah!
What you may not already know is that I moved into my boyfriend's townhouse! He purchased his place (his first house!) a year ago and moved in right before we started dating. It has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and tons of built-in storage space. I'm really excited to decorate! (I asked last year if he was done decorating since there's no art on the walls and not all the bookshelves are full, and he said he was. I hope to change that, haha.) He did pick up a few things at West Elm—pillows and a tray for his ottoman—but it needs a bit more to feel more like home to me. It's also way more modern than my typical style so it's a bit of a challenge!
The first thing I bought for my/our new home was a rug for the living room. His main level—living room, dining room, and kitchen—is all open with the same dark hardwood floor, so rugs definitely help to separate the spaces (plus add a bit of coziness). He bought a really nice rug for the dining room late last year (though it does seem like more of an outdoor rug) but still hadn't gotten anything for the living room. When we were searching for rugs last year, I saw this one and knew it was the one immediately. His couch is dark and his floors are dark, so it needed to be something lighter. It's not stark white, so it goes better with the somewhat creamy walls. Since his couch is a dark grey, the grey in the rug worked perfectly. He didn't end up buying it, so it became my first "big" home purchase a few weeks ago (you know, other than the Ikea things I bought for my place in Utah). I snagged it on major sale!
While the rug helped to finish the space, it still isn't completely done. I've been keeping my eyes out on Pinterest for living room inspiration with the same main elements as our living room: dark grey couch, dark floors, light rug. I'm keeping it all in mind when it comes to the final touches: (more) pillows, blankets, greenery, artwork, etc. I especially love all the wood accents in these images! The main color scheme is charcoal grey, cream, and silver with various shades of blue...and as much as I'd love to add some blush pink, it might get some pushback. ;) (Luckily I don't mind grey and blue!)
It'll be fun and interesting to blend his more modern style with my more traditional style, and I think my biggest challenge will be styling the built-in bookshelves around the fireplace. Any tips for a novice? ;)
