Amour Vert Reviews: Silk Mini Skirt, Cotton Midi Skirt, Modal Wrap Skirt, Tie-waist Dress
Here’s part two of my Amour Vert reviews featuring my three skirts and a dress! (Read my review on my various tops here.) I have also recently purchased a pair of wide leg pants to spice up my work-from-home wardrobe, but those weren’t included here since they are brand new to my closet. You can see them featured in this month’s style sudoku, though! (And so far, I’m loving them.)
Amour Vert Reviews
As I mentioned in the first review post, I’ve been a fan of Amour Vert for over four years now. I fell in love with their “effortlessly sustainable” mission that spans the entire production of their garments. Most of their garments are made here in the U.S. (they are based in California), and they use eco-friendly materials. For being ethical, their garments are reasonably priced, which is one of the main reasons I was drawn to them as a grad student making a meager salary.
Now, I own a variety of items from the brand: a silk sleeveless shirt, two modal blend tees, a cable knit sweater, a silk skirt, two midi skirts, a dress, and some accessories. I haven’t worn my skirts and dress as much as my tops. My Amour Vert pieces feel very special to me, so I have a bad habit of “saving” them for worthy occasions or just not wearing them because I don’t want to ruin them!
In general, Amour Vert garments are made of extremely soft and substantial materials that feel like they will hold up over many years of regular wear. I do think most of their garments are made more for average height and taller women. I am borderline petite at 5’4”, so some items are just a tad longer than I would like. I typically take a size XS or small depending on the garment and fit I’m looking for.
This post was not written in collaboration with Amour Vert, but they’re definitely one of those dream brands I’d love to work with someday. I just wanted to share what I’ve purchased so far and how everything has held up! I really want Amour Vert to make it through the pandemic, so if you are in a good place financially and want to support a small, ethical business, consider shopping with them.
Leeron silk mini skirt
This gorgeous silk skirt was technically my first Amour Vert purchase—and I ordered it from Piperlime in their going-out-of-business sale a few years ago. (Remember that retailer?) I took a chance on a final-sale garment by a brand that I had never tried before, and it’s still one of my favorite garments in my closet!
I bought this skirt because I was drawn to the dark floral print. Isn’t it beautiful?! Sadly, I haven’t worn this skirt in about two years, but I can’t bring myself to get rid of it. The print makes me happy every time I see it hanging in my closet, and sometimes I pull it out just to admire it. Now I’m inspired to style it once we’re able to leave the house again.
After reading the reviews, I ordered a size small, which was the right call considering it is 100% silk and does not allow for any stretch. I find that it’s slightly sheer in sunlight, so I wear a black half-slip under just in case. Like my silk Riley shirt, the silk in this skirt feels luscious.
I’ve worn this skirt only 10 times so far, which doesn’t surprise me much because I baby it! I definitely don’t want to ruin this skirt, haha. After all these years, it still looks brand new! I paid a whopping $27 for it in the Piperlime sale, so it’s down to a cost per wear of $2.70.
Greta cotton blend midi skirt
When I started my full-time job in the summer of 2017 after finishing up grad school, I decided that it was time to try midi skirts for the first time. The Greta skirt by Amour Vert was my first midi skirt purchase (size XS)…and I was honestly surprised by how much I liked it!
This skirt is made from a midweight blend of mostly cotton with a little bit of kapok. I had to look up what kapok was; it’s a sustainable alternative to polyester made from a kapok tree. At the end of this skirt’s life, I believe it can be composted, so that’s pretty cool! (Though there is likely elastic in the waistband.)
The thing I worried most about with regards to midi skirts was the length. The length of this skirt falls just below my knees, and thankfully, it doesn’t feel like it’s swallowing me when I wear it. My one pet peeve is that the skirt likes to fall between my legs when I wear it; not sure if it’s just too much fabric or the weight/gathering at the waistband that is causing that.
I purchased this skirt for $109, and after wearing it seven times (and blogging it five of those times), it’s down to a cost per wear of $15.57. This is a tricky skirt to wear in the summer because it’s a little too heavy for really hot days! I save it for the more mild days.
Mareike modal blend wrap midi skirt
I purchased the Mareike wrap skirt in the fall of 2018 because I didn’t have a black midi in my closet and I thought this one would be a good option to have in my arsenal. I also ordered this skirt in a size XS; the wrap allows for some flexibility in the sizing.
To be honest, as much as I love the flirty wrap style, this skirt isn’t as versatile for my lifestyle. It’s a very heavy modal skirt, which is good when it comes to the wrap because it doesn’t fly up quite as easily when it’s breezy (but it does still fly up in strong wind as I learned, haha) but the weight makes it hard to get a secure tie at the waist. As I wear it, it tends to slide down from my natural waist, which is wear I would prefer it to sit (and stay, lol). That’s basically why I’ve only worn it a couple of times.
That said, it’s a stunning skirt, and the quality is just as you’d expect from an Amour Vert garment. Plus, it’s made of modal! The link for this skirt is still live even though it’s not currently available, so maybe they plan on restocking it soon… Because it’s so comfy, it would make an excellent option for working from home!
I paid $83 for this skirt, and since it’s only been worn twice, the cost per wear is the worst out of any of my Amour Vert garments at $41.50.
Kim modal blend tie-waist dress
It’s my namesake dress, so of course I had to try it! 😉 This tie-waist dress ended up being an unexpected favorite. I ordered it along with a top that didn’t end up working out for me. I’m wearing this dress in a size small.
Since this dress has long sleeves, I love pulling it out for the mild spring and fall days or cooler summer days. Just like my other modal items, it’s so soft and smooth on the skin. I pretty much want every modal item Amour Vert releases ever.
This particular style of dress worried me at first because I wasn’t sure that it would hide my tummy area (the part of my body I’m most insecure about). Some t-shirt dresses don’t sit on me how I like. Luckily, the dress isn’t clingy, and the wrap waist and tie camouflage the midsection very well! The tie can be a little tricky to get it looking right, though, haha. It wraps across the waist and then ties in the front.
I have not worn this dress nearly enough for how much I love it—only five times according to Stylebook. Dang! After spending $110.50 on it, it’s currently at a cost per wear of $22.10.
I keep hoping that Amour Vert will release a sleeveless version of this dress so I can wear it on hot summer days!
