How to Style a Shacket if You're a Millennial

There aren’t too many recent trends that I’ve been interested in added to my wardrobe. Last month I added a pair of lugsole boots (and shared my tips for updating your wardrobe for a new season on a budget!), and this month, I picked up my first ever shirt-jacket, a.k.a. shacket! Are you into the shacket trend? They’re a little bit heavier than a shirt and a little bit lighter than a jacket. They’re a great layer for those mild fall days with just that hint of chill in the air.

I honestly wasn’t sure if I was a fan of this trend when it first made an appearance a year (or so?) ago. When you live somewhere with four proper seasons, there aren’t many days in a year that you can actually wear a shacket as outerwear—it’s usually too warm out or too cold—or you’re like me and hate being cold at all so you typically wear outerwear that’s heavier than what the weather forecast calls for.

I changed my tune when I saw this corduroy shacket from Madewell. Isn’t the mahogany color stunning?! Not to mention, it’s corduroy, which is also trending right now. I read multiple reviews and landed on size small; I wanted it to be roomy enough for light layering and for my broad shoulders but didn’t want to be totally overwhelmed by it.

How to Style a Shacket (If You’re a Millennial)

I don’t know about you, but all of the outfits I’ve seen with shackets feature them layered over cropped tops (or bra tops) and worn with either leggings or loose mom jeans. There seems to be no in between. As I am a millennial and not a member of Gen Z, I am no longer in my 20s, and I am also no longer cool enough to pull off an outfit like that. Not to mention, those aren’t outfits I would wear in my every day life (#9to5style). I’ve always been uncool and now it’s time I embrace it, ha.

If you’re also a card-carrying millennial like me, I hope this outfit serves as inspiration for you! As a short person, I do love the cropped top trend, so I wore a relatively recent cropped top addition with this outfit. I don’t wear cropped tops without high rise denim! Of course, since I’m a millennial, I’m wearing high rise skinny jeans. The horror!!! I just can’t quit ‘em, though it’s really weird to think that skinny jeans ARE the new mom jeans because millennials are moms now. That makes me feel old!

I don’t know if ankle boots are still in, but I’m definitely still wearing mine because I’m a millennial and I don’t care if they’re still in or not… I still wear mine 99% of the time in the fall and winter! I picked a pair of black boots to ground the outfit, but I specifically opted for the pair with a light sole so they didn’t look too stark.

I topped the whole outfit off with a tawny brown floppy felt hat. I love the additional color; together with the shacket, they match the fallen leaves just about perfectly!

Does this outfit make me look—what is the word—”cheugy”? Oh well. Gen Z better prepare for when Generation Alpha is in their 20s and making the fashion rules. 😆 (I’m praying that low rise pants don’t ever come back into style!!!)
