How to Wear Winter Boots with Cropped Jeans

Outdoor Idaho winter outfit with plaid flannel shirt — Cotton Cashmere Cat Hair

We’re in the home stretch of winter around these parts, and I for one cannot WAIT for it to be spring! I’m ready for warmth, greenery, flowers, and thunderstorms to return. The only thing I’m not super excited about is the return of BUGS. I could do without bugs, lol.

In this outdoorsy late winter outfit, I’m wearing three recent purchases for their second time on the blog: the Outerknown Sierra flannel shirt, Madewell curvy skinny jeans: heatrich edition, and Romy Studio clay drop earrings (the latter of which are unfortunately no longer available). The flannel shirt is now on sale, and the jeans are on sale at Madewell but only one size is available (I linked to the straight-sized full-price jeans at Zappos but you can find the Madewell link in the Outfit Details below if you’re interested)! I’m also sharing a super simple trick I do when my jeans aren’t long enough to tuck into boots but I want my ankles to stay warm!

How to Wear Winter Boots with Cropped Jeans

With the crop jean/pant trend, it is inevitable that you end up with a pair of jeans that is too short to tuck into a pair of boots. I love wearing slightly cropped jeans with ankle boots and a sliver of ankle showing, but that’s not always practical in the cold winter months. And sometimes you don’t own or don’t want to wear a pair of long socks over the jeans that break up the leg line (since I’m already borderline petite, doing this can make me look even shorter!).

In this situation, which is illustrated with this outfit, I wear a pair of wool socks tucked under the jeans instead of trying to force them over top. These particular socks are not quite long enough to look right if I tried to wear them over the jeans, especially because there is a good 1-2 inches of bare leg between the hem of the jeans and top of the boots. It’s such a simple trick and can be even more impactful with a fun color or pattern. I was originally thinking I’d wear a pair of navy socks when I remembered I had these fun red snowflake socks by Smartwool! They complement the red in the flannel shirt. Of course, I reserve this type of outfit and style trick for the less volatile winter days!

Another bonus of wearing jeans that hit just above your boots is you don’t have to deal with them popping out of your boots because they’re not at that super awkward/annoying length when they can technically tuck but they definitely won’t stay tucked with movement. Ya know what I mean?

What are your feelings on wearing socks under your jeans? Have you tried this simple trick before?

P.S. If you’ve had your eyes on the Outerknown Sierra flannel shirt, now is the time to buy as it’s 50% off! It’s the thickest flannel shirt I own currently. It is final sale so be sure to study the size chart before purchasing. For reference, I’m wearing a size small in the marine edie plaid, and it’s definitely boxy/roomy and that’s how I prefer my flannel shirts these days, so I think it fits perfectly and I hope it doesn’t shrink! (The arms are also long enough for me, and the shoulder width isn’t tight!)
