WAMA Underwear Review + Best Eco-Friendly Materials to Wear
Have you ever thought about the clothes you wear MORE than simply thinking how much you love them or how much they fit in with the rest of your wardrobe? I’ll be honest: I don’t usually think about my clothes much deeper than that. But I’m starting to take note of the materials my clothes are made out of and seeking out more eco-friendly and sustainable options when I can.
I recognize that I have privilege because I have the ability to spend extra money on more sustainable clothing, which tends to be more expensive than alternatives. Now that I’m employed and no longer living on a grad student salary, it’s important for me to do what I can to reduce my individual impact on the environment, and one way for me to do that is through purchasing clothes made from eco-friendly textiles. I hope this post is helpful for those of you planning to add more sustainably-made clothes to your own wardrobe! (Above all, the most eco-friendly and sustainable items you can wear are the ones already in your closet!)
I’m excited to share a review of some recent eco-friendly additions to my undergarment wardrobe I received courtesy of WAMA Underwear! Featured in this post are three pairs of hemp underwear, a bralette, and a discount code! Plus, I compiled a list of the best eco-friendly and sustainable materials to wear featuring items in my own closet from a few of my favorite brands.
This post is partially sponsored, but as always, all opinions are my own—and I so appreciate your support of the brands that support me and CCCH!
WAMA Underwear Review
Hemp Underwear
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been in dire need of an underwear drawer upgrade for a few years now. This might be embarrassing to say, but I still have underwear from college. Don’t @ me! Haha. I’m also, at over 30 years old, finally at the time in my life when I don’t want to wear any undies that pinch or ride up or feel too tight. WAMA hemp underwear has been a welcome addition to my underwear collection—all three pairs I picked are so comfortable they barely feel like I’m wearing anything!
I selected the thong underwear and high waisted underwear in green and boy shorts underwear in black. WAMA hemp underwear runs slightly smaller than other brands; per the size charts provided on each product page, I’m between a small and a medium, so I ended up going with medium because I didn’t want anything too snug. It was my first time ordering and trying high waisted underwear, and I am absolutely thrilled with this pair—they’re SO comfortable! I’m not sure why I waited so long to try a pair. I ended up buying more!
My thong underwear is also extremely comfortable (as far as thongs go, at least!). The boy shorts fit me a little strangely; they’re fine around the waist but snug around my legs, so they tend to ride up as I move around. I purchased them to sleep in because I run hot and wear shorts to sleep in every night, and they’re fine for that purpose! WAMA also offers bikini underwear if that's more your style.

Hemp Bralette
The racerback bralette I ordered in a size M as well and it’s a nice, looser fit that isn’t constricting in the band—it’s perfect for lounging! I also ordered a pair of boxer briefs for Korri, and he loves them. He’s typically a medium or large in other brands and I ordered size XL for him per the size chart and they fit perfect. I also bought more pairs for him since he loves them! WAMA offers sizes XS to 4XL in their women’s underwear and sizes S to 4XL in their men’s underwear. (Love the size inclusivity!)
Hemp is gaining popularity in the garment industry because it’s eco-friendly, sustainable, breathable, and antibacterial! It’s also plant-based and completely biodegradable. Hemp is an extremely durable textile, yet it softens with each wash. It’s basically a magic material! I’ve worn and washed my undies and can attest to the softness. Read more about the wonders of hemp and more right on the WAMA blog. I never knew how incredible and versatile hemp is while also being eco-friendly and sustainable and am thrilled that more brands are using it.
Have you tried hemp underwear yet? (If not, use my WAMA discount code below to try a pair for yourself!) What about any other hemp garments?

Best Eco-Friendly Materials to Wear
HEMP & HEMP BLENDS
In additional to being an excellent eco-friendly material on its own, hemp can often be found blended with other sustainable fashion textiles, including organic cotton.
Last summer, I discovered Aliya Wanek, a Black-owned fashion brand, through another blogger and placed an order for a couple of her Ami sweatshirts made from a blend of hemp and organic cotton as soon as they became available. It was my first time trying out a hemp blend, and I love them so much! They aren’t super soft but they are extremely durable and wash well, which is great for me and my messy self! I wear them every week to WFH, not kidding.
RECYCLED & ORGANIC COTTON, ORGANIC LINEN
An even more sustainable material than organic cotton is recycled cotton because it reuses existing cotton instead of needing to grow new cotton (this applies to any recycled textile—no need to create/grow “virgin” material). Organic linen is along the same veins as organic cotton and is the better option sustainability-wise.
Two Days Off, another Black-owned brand I learned about last year, offers made-to-order garments from natural fiber textiles, including linen, cotton, wool, and hemp. I ordered the Suki top in clay, which is made from 100% linen. It’s such a well-constructed warm weather top that can be easily worn for the office under a blazer! (P.S. It’s now on sale so scoop one up while you can!)
MODAL, ETHICAL WOOL, TENCEL LYOCELL, CUPRO
Amour Vert is one of my personal favorite brands offering eco-friendly and sustainably-produced garments. My closet is slowly filling up with an assortment of items because everything I own by AV is well-made, soft, and comfortable! Not to mention, AV is one of the more inexpensive options for sustainable shopping.
Amour Vert works with producers to create their own in-house fabrics and fabric blends. One of my favorite is modal, of which I own multiple garments made from the fabric. It’s silky-soft and smooth to the touch. DREAMY!
Last spring, I reviewed my Amour Vert shirts, tees, and sweaters and my Amour Vert skirts and dresses but have since added more!
RECYCLED PLASTIC/POLYESTER
Some brands even go so far as to recycling those pesky single-use plastic water bottles made from PET (or PETE) into fabric. (PET items are not recyclable where I am because we have mixed recycling, and it crushes down too easily/thinly and mixes in with the paper, causing the paper to become useless.) I am THRILLED about this relatively recent development in the fashion industry. I do believe Girlfriend Collective pioneered this trend with their cult-favorite leggings, and now they have a wide assortment of activewear and loungewear made with recycled material. I own a pair of their high rise bike shorts!
Another brand utilizing recycled plastic in its garments is Everlane, with their ReNew line of garments. (Re:Down was a similar concept using recycled down, and ReCashmere items are made from recycled cashmere.) I own four items from the ReNew line—three are fleece made from recycled plastic water bottles! It’s not the softest fleece you’d ever wear, but it’s cool knowing that it’s made from plastic. Read my reviews: ReNew fleece raglan sweatshirt, matching ReNew fleece sweatpant, and ReNew teddy bomber and slipper.
