When Spring Feels Like Winter

Madewell light wash skinny jeans spring outfit idea — Cotton Cashmere Cat Hair

We’ve been riding the spring weather rollercoaster as of late—one day it’s sunny and nearly 80°F (see my recent “referee chic” outfit) and the next it’s windy and barely 50°F. Ah, the joys of the transitional seasons!

Even though we’re all beyond ready to pack away our winter wardrobe to welcome warm weather, we’re not out of the woods yet (unless you live in Florida, ha!). The cold can be irritating, but spring and fall are still my favorite seasons to dress for because there are SO MANY outfit possibilities and combinations due to the variable weather. I find myself cycling between sweaters, cardigans, shorts, jeans, and dresses, often all within the same week. I tried to leave the house without a coat the other day and figured my cashmere sweater would be warm enough on its own. I was wrong!

When spring feels like winter, I like to rely on a few key pieces to get me through the cold spell.

How to Dress for Spring When it Feels Like Winter

I don’t do a closet changeover with the seasons because I’m fortunate to have enough space to display it all (for the most part, lol; I have had to buy a couple of underbed storage boxes to contain the loungewear and activewear I’ve acquired over the past year!). If you change over your closet, here’s what I’d recommend leaving unpacked so you can grab it in case of a cold spring spell:

  • Thicker cardigans

  • Thin sweaters (i.e. merino wool or cashmere)

  • Medium-weight sweaters (i.e. cotton)

  • Lightweight puffer coat

  • Ankle boots

Keep in mind colors, too. In the spring, I like to wear a lot of lighter colors, like ivory, tan/camel, blush pink, etc. so I try to pick cold weather items that have a spring-like color palette.

For this outfit, if it wasn’t obvious by the flowering trees behind me, the pink striped tee and light wash denim make it clear that it’s spring. As it was too cold to go without another layer, I popped my camel cashmere cardigan on top. The cardigan is warm yet lightweight, and the lighter color doesn’t weigh down the rest of the outfit. Plus, it plays really nicely with the brown flats! I really love how the outfit came together despite the fact that I was freezing, haha!
