5 Years Later: A Practical Thanksgiving Outfit
Last year, I started doing the 5 years later outfit challenge: I picked out an outfit I first wore and blogged back in 2016 and recreated it using the same (or very similar) items. I had so much fun that I decided to keep it going for 2022, so now I’m recreating outfits I wore back in 2017! (Wow, I can’t believe 2017 was 5 years ago already…that was the year I finished my PhD!)
My goals with this series are to put together updated versions of some of my favorite past outfits, see how much my style has changed over the years (if at all), highlight the items that are still in my closet five or more years later, determine if it’s time to pass on some of my older items, inspire you to evaluate the longevity in your own wardrobe, and most importantly, remind you (and myself) that it’s cool to rewear your favorite outfits/items!
Let’s dissect the final 5 years later outfit of fall 2022!
A Practical Thanksgiving Outfit — 2022 vs. 2017
It wasn’t difficult for me to pick the November2017 outfit to restyle this month! I love this casual, practical Thanksgiving outfit. It’s still very me, even in 2022. And even though I wore jeans to Thanksgiving, this was one of my most comfortable pairs of skinny jeans—super stretchy in the waist to allow for lots of yummy food! Ha. In 2017, I wore a Grana sweater, Madewell jeans, Earth sneakers, and Kate Spade satchel. I technically still own everything except the sneakers, but the jeans don’t fit anymore and need to be listed on Poshmark. I only included one of the 2017 items in the new look for 2022!
Items from 2017 I’m Still Wearing in 2022
The only item I’m wearing from the original outfit is my Grana cashmere sweater! This is one of my very favorite sweaters from Grana, and it’s unfortunately been sold out for years now. (It actually seems like the whole brand is dead or drying because they aren’t producing anything new. Everything has been “on sale” and sold out in many sizes with no restocks for a while now…plus, I haven’t gotten any emails or seen any activity on their social channels. A bummer!) I’ve kept this sweater around for so long because it’s super soft and different from every other sweater I own. I love the loose knit, unique pattern, and balloon sleeves. Plus, it (still) fits perfectly all these years (and a pandemic) later!
The only reason why I’m not carrying my Kate Spade satchel in the new outfit is because it didn’t go with my red ankle boots! They’re just different enough in color to look weird and not cool or intentional. I reach for my black circle crossbody 95% of the time when I leave the house, so that’s why I grabbed it for this outfit. I still own the satchel, though!
What’s New in 2022
The remaining three items (plus the coat and sunglasses) in the 2022 outfit are new! Like the other 5 years later outfits from this fall, this outfit is basically a complete restyle.
The skinny jeans to wide leg jeans swap was made possible by the complete 180 done by fashion trends this year. I did consider wearing a different pair of skinny jeans, but I didn’t have the energy to try them all on to see which one felt the most comfortable. Plus, I ended up really liking how the wide leg jeans looked, especially with the boots. Korri calls these my “baggy pants”—and he is not a fan of them LOL. As far as jeans go, they’re quite comfortable to wear (and sit in) for long periods of time and would work well for Thanksgiving dinner.
Since I don’t own the sneakers anymore, I wore a different pair of red/burgundy shoes. I set out all three of my pairs and really loved how the ankle boots looked with the wide leg jeans. I know technically ankle boots with a short shaft like this aren’t “in style” anymore, but I’m still going to wear them. I still love them, so why not? I mentioned above that I still own my Kate Spade satchel, but it didn’t match my boots and that’s why I swapped it for a different bag.
I added a coat this time around mostly because I decided that I didn’t want to freeze while shooting these photos. We’re in the midst of a January-like weather pattern right now, so it’s COLD! I run cold already and was so glad I had a coat on. We stopped by one of our favorite Boise coffee shops, Mocha Moose, for warm drinks, and my hot chai helped, too!
Which Thanksgiving outfit is more your style: the 2017 original with the skinny jeans and sneakers or the new 2022 version with the wide leg jeans and boots? I’d wear either!
P.S. I’m wearing a new color in my beloved Dior Lip Glow: red brick! It’s a gorgeous, buildable red that looks great for fall/winter/holiday.
