MATE the Label Reviews: Tencel Cotton Sleepwear
I discovered MATE the Label in 2021 when I shopped their popular annual May sale (their birthday sale). I purchased tencel cotton sleep shorts, and the rest was history! I absolutely fell in love with MATE’s sleepwear. So much so that during their birthday sale this year, I purchased even more sleepwear: a long-sleeved tee to match the shorts, another matching tee and shorts set, and a dress! I absolutely love sleeping in MATE’s clothes and think you will, too.
What is MATE the Label?
If you’re new to the women-founded brand, MATE the Label has a simple mission: “to provide people everywhere with essentials that are clean from seed to skin.” They use organic materials and produce all of their garments in Los Angeles. I have been extremely impressed with everything I’ve purchased from the brand so far. Yes, the prices are on the high end, but I’ve found that you can truly feel the quality of every garment. They have a heft to them!
Below, I reviewed all of the sleepwear I currently own by MATE the Label. You’ll find details on each garment, sizing information, my thoughts, and links to purchase your own!
For sizing reference, my current (pandemic) size is typically a small. I am borderline petite at 5’4” and have broad shoulders and long arms. I tend to size up in tops for extra room in the shoulders and length in the sleeves, but MATE’s sleepwear is designed to fit slightly oversized already so I did not size up in anything.

My Thoughts
I received a sleep dress as my Christmas Eve PJs one year (my family used to give the kids a new pair of PJs every Christmas Eve that we could open that night), and I still wear that thing today. I never realized just how much I love wearing dresses to sleep in! After a childhood growing up wearing oversized tees to sleep, wearing a proper sleep dress isn’t that different—and it’s better. MATE the Label’s tencel sleep tee dress is an absolute dream.
I mentioned above that MATE’s garments have a “heft” to them, and it’s especially noticeable in the tencel cotton blend of their sleepwear. Their tencel cotton sleepwear are made of a thick fabric that is super soft to the touch and drapes beautifully. I took my true size small and it’s perfect to sleep in! It’s a relaxed fit that skims the body. I wish the cocoa color was still available; it’s an absolutely beautiful brown.
My dress has a stain right in the middle of the front of the dress from my toothpaste. I was going to edit it out, but I wanted to show you what a toothpaste stain looks like! Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get it out in the wash, so I wonder if the dress was stained by the toothpaste? I don’t wear this out of the house so no one sees it except for me and now you (the entire internet, HA).

My Thoughts
My very first MATE the Label sleep garment was the pair of sedona tencel sleep shorts (above left). I originally purchased those shorts in a small, but the elastic felt way too tight on my waist, so I exchanged them for a medium. The medium is too big, so I wonder if I just got a defective small that fit more like an XS. My charcoal shorts in small fit great! I wear my sedona set when I’m feeling bloated or in need of extra comfort.
I am a hot sleeper, so I need to wear shorts to sleep no matter the time of year (there is only one set of long-pant PJs I can wear: bamboo PJs). This is why I love the sleep dress, too. In the winter, I pair my sleep shorts with long-sleeved tees since I often end up with an arm out of the covers and hate being cold. I love that you can mix and match MATE’s tencel sleepwear to create a matching set perfect for you!
The long sleeve sleep tee fits a little bit looser than the sleep tee dress, but I still preferred my true size small. If you’re in between sizes, I may suggest sizing down in the tee. I haven’t experienced any noticeable shrinkage when washing and drying. They look just as good as the day I purchased them! I cannot speak more highly of MATE the Label’s tencel sleepwear—it’s definitely not too good to be true. It’s been worth the price and more (and it’s even better if you can snag it on sale!).
