Petite Style Guide
I’m sooo excited to announce a brand new freebie for y’all! I’ve been wanting to make this particular freebie for a while (since before I launched the Weekly Outfit Diary) but kept putting it off thinking that there are already so many guides like this out there in the world, what good does one more do? But I really felt like I could help on this particular topic: petite style!
I’ve been short my whooole life. I’ve been saying I’m 5’4” for years but the last time I went to the doctor, they measured me at 5’3.5”. Suddenly my whole life felt like a lie. 😆 Jokes aside, I’ve learned a thing or two about shopping for clothes as a (borderline) petite person—and I’ve poured all of that knowledge into this guide!
Let’s dive into the brand new Petite Style Guide (and chat about a few petite fashion tips while we’re at it)!
Petite Style Guide
Petite Fashion Tips
Before I tell you about the guide, there are some things I like to keep in mind when I’m putting together outfits as a [borderline] petite person. Here are my TOP fashion tips for my fellow petite people:
To lengthen your leg line, opt for high-rise bottoms and tuck your tops or wear cropped tops that hit at the top of the waistband. You don’t need to show any skin if you don’t want to! And if you can’t wear high-rise bottoms because your torso is too short, look for midrise bottoms (8”-9” rise). That will still give you a leg-lengthening look.
Don’t be afraid of wide silhouettes! Wide leg pants and jeans are in right now. They might sound scary at first (they did for me), but try a less expensive pair to start and play around with your closet a little. It takes some getting used to but they’re so comfy!
If you prefer carrying big bags (to work or school), opt for the “medium” sized totes. They won’t overwhelm your frame like the larger totes do and most still fit a laptop if needed.
When it comes to colors and prints, try mixing it up with monochrome (various shades of the same color), and look for garments with smaller prints. Larger prints are visually jarring on shorter people. If you have a large print you love to wear, neutralize it with another layer, like a blazer or jacket.
Find a tailor you love and trust! My goal is for you to find items that fit you off the rack, but remember: It’s not you, it’s the clothes. Don’t be afraid to take things to a tailor to make them fit perfectly for you! Always buy items that fit your “trouble” spots (broad shoulders, waist/stomach, thighs, etc.) and take them in elsewhere if needed.
Embrace your height! There’s not much you can do about it except wear high heels all of the time. If you love high heels, by all means! Please wear what you love, whether that’s high heels or flats or chunky loafers or sneakers.
I highly recommend documenting your outfits—and journaling about them after you wear them. That’s a great way to figure out what you love to wear and why you love to wear them. Plus, you’ll figure out when items/outfits don’t work or make you feel confident. You can use the Weekly Outfit Diary for that!
If you struggle with finding petite-friendly garments in the first place, my new freebie, the Petite Style Guide, is for you!
