What to Wear for Thanksgiving
Not gonna lie, friends: Today was a terrible day and I’m not feeling super grateful or thankful at the moment, but in a few short weeks, it’ll be Thanksgiving in the U.S. I’m still of the opinion that Canada has the superior Thanksgiving date; having it in October just makes more sense to me. It would make the holiday season last longer, because then you could take down all of your Halloween decor on November 1st and fully get into the holiday mode without interruption!
As much as I don’t like the historic significance of Thanksgiving and how it became a holiday, I do like that it’s one of the only holidays that solely revolves around food and family/friends. There’s no expectation of gifts, no fireworks, no dress code, no need to stay up late for a ball drop. Whether you enjoy a chill holiday at home or are attending a large gathering, it’s fun to think about what to wear, too!
If you are looking for Thanksgiving outfits that are festive, stylish, and comfortable, you’ve come to the right place! Below, I shared a guide on what to wear for Thanksgiving, which includes a round up of 18 casual and comfortable Thanksgiving outfit ideas! What do you like to wear for Thanksgiving?

What to Wear for Thanksgiving
Cozy Basics + Burgundy
This is one of my favorite outfits that I actually wore to Thanksgiving a few years ago! I call this one a practical Thanksgiving outfit. When in doubt, throw on a cozy sweater, stretchy jeans, and a jewel tone or two. I matched my velvet burgundy sneakers to my burgundy satchel.
Flannel Shirt + Fall Colors
A lot of these outfit ideas feature some sort of fall color combination. Shades of rich brown, earth greens, creamy whites, and black are some of my favorite colors to wear at this time of year. Pair your olive green jeans with a cozy flannel shirt, then top it all off with a tawny brown wool hat!
Pink Sweater + Burgundy Pants
Colored pants are making a comeback, so I recommend picking up a pair! I’ve worn my burgundy pants so much over the years (it’s sad they no longer fit me), and this outfit in particular I wore to Thanksgiving 2018! Skinny pants may not be in style anymore but they work so well with tall boots.
Oversized Flannel Shirt + Ponte Pants
Ponte pants make the perfect Thanksgiving day pants because they are stretchy AND they look like leggings but aren’t! Pair yours with a cozy, oversized flannel shirt. This outfit is so comfy that you won’t even need to change before the post-Thanksgiving dinner nap on the couch.
Jewel Tones + Stretchy Jeans
Jewel tones are the perfect colors to wear for Thanksgiving lunch or dinner. Start with a simple base of stretchy jeans or pants and ankle boots and complete your look with a couple of options, like gold and burgundy, emerald and burgundy, ruby and sapphire, or amethyst and emerald.
Fall Neutrals + Shiny Boots
Looking for a somewhat dressier Thanksgiving lunch or dinner outfit idea? Black jeans (or pants, such as ponte pants) are the perfect option! Dress them up with a cozy cashmere sweater and shiny leather boots. The different textures in this outfit elevate it so it feels less boring.
More Fall Colors + Patterned Skirt
We aren’t sick of the fall color combinations yet, right?! I couldn’t narrow down these outfits because these color combos are some of my very favorites! An easy way to dress for Thanksgiving is to wear a neutral base, like this black and white skirt, and top it off with fun seasonal colors.
Classic Cable Knit + Dark Wash Denim
Keep your Thanksgiving day outfit classic with a cable knit sweater and dark wash denim! Don’t love skinny jeans, or want to try another style? Swap them for straight leg jeans or kick crop jeans. This is a great core outfit that you can accessorize with boots or flats and jewelry.
A Moody Fall Color Palette
Are you sensing a trend? I love a theme, and this moody fall color palette is perfect for Thanksgiving, especially if you are a fan of looking like a pumpkin! Play around with the darker neutrals in your closet and throw on a dark spice or similarly colorful sweater to take the outfit up a notch.
Flannel Shirt + Corduroy Pants
Flannel shirts and sweaters are my go-to tops for Thanksgiving day. There’s just something about being cozy in soft things while eating turkey and mashed potatoes that is super comforting. I’m also loving that corduroy pants have made a comeback; they’re soft and pair perfectly with flannel!
Boxy Sweater + Wide Leg Crop Pants
Even though it’s not so obvious in this outfit roundup because these are older outfits, I’ve basically stopped wearing skinny jeans and pants. Wide leg crop pants are another great option for Thanksgiving (if they aren’t too snug) because they are loose! Pair them with a similarly loose sweater.
Bright Red Sweater + Jeans
Go bold with a bright red sweater (or other bright color of choice) for Thanksgiving! It’s a fun nod to the holiday season. I paired mine with jeans, simple brown flats, and a cozy infinity scarf. Of course, make this outfit your own with your favorite comfy jeans and weather-appropriate shoes.
Cozy Pullover + Leggings
If you’re spending a cozy Thanksgiving day in, wear your coziest fleece pullover and leggings! You can always throw on a pair of boots (mine are lace-up lugsole boots) if you need to grab any forgotten ingredients at the grocery store or if you’re headed to a family member’s house to celebrate.
The Perfect Fall Color Palette
If your weather allows for it, wear a skirt sans tights to your Thanksgiving lunch or dinner affair! I love this outfit because it really is the perfect fall color palette (the leafy background definitely helps, too). Layer on different shades of brown and ivory for a festive and stylish Thanksgiving look.
Burgundy Stripes + Flats
If you live somewhere that doesn’t get cold enough for a sweater or flannel shirt at Thanksgiving (what’s that like?!), pair your comfy jeans or pants with a seasonally-appropriate striped tee and flats. (I actually WAS in South Dakota one year for Thanksgiving when it was 70°F! So warm!)
Wool Cardigan + Ponte Pants
Another ponte pants outfit idea! This one features a cozy cardigan and scarf. I’d probably wear boots instead of flats now (especially if it was cold enough to need a scarf), but you could also ditch the scarf and wear a fun statement necklace to dress this outfit up more for Thanksgiving.
Pumpkin Orange + Olive Green
My spicy pumpkin orange (or brown?) sweater makes another appearance! (Three of these outfits were a part of my October style sudoku. That’s one of my favorite style sudoku capsule wardrobes ever, mostly because of the color palette!) Pair pumpkin orange with olive green for an easy outfit.
Shirt Jacket + Leggings
I wore this outfit to Thanksgiving dinner with my family two years ago! Leggings are my new favorite Thanksgiving go-to. They can’t be compressive or tight on the midsection, though. Stretchy pants/leggings are a must for feeling comfortable after indulging in a big meal.
