Spoonful of Comfort Review
When you’re not sure what to send a sick or grieving distant friend or family member, or if you want to surprise someone and let them know you are thinking of them, care packages, food gift baskets, and other consumable gifts are almost always a safe bet. I learned about Spoonful of Comfort many years ago, and ever since then they have been my go-to source for care packages. They are known for their gourmet soup care packages but have since expanded to offer more food options.
I’ve sent Spoonful of Comfort care packages to loved ones multiple times and included the brand in my experiences and consumables gift guide, but I had yet to try it for myself…until now! I used my own money to order TWO Spoonful of Comfort care packages for myself (and Korri) so I could share an unsponsored, honest review of Spoonful of Comfort and if they are worth it! I tried both a soup package and a cookie package.

Spoonful of Comfort Review
I ordered my first Spoonful of Comfort care package back in January 2021, and since then, I’ve sent five more care packages to loved ones. As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, they are known for their soup care packages that come in a variety of flavors (including classics like chicken noodle soup, chicken and wild rice, and tomato), but you can also opt for smaller/less expensive care packages, like a cookie care package. They also recently added seasonal ice cream care packages!
In addition to all the goodies that come standard in the care packages, you can also add optional items (“extra care”) to any of their packages, and these include things like soup toppers, blankets, cozy socks, tea, books, puzzles, dog treats, kitchen utensils, baby toys, and more. (Check out all of the extra care options!) Every soup care package comes with a ladle and personal note, and each item inside is packaged with care.
One feature of Spoonful of Comfort that I appreciate is the fact that you can preorder your care package. All of the food is made fresh, and standard shipping takes two to three days at most, so the food arrives shortly after it’s made. When you check out, you can select a date in the future so you can be sure your recipient will be around to accept it. Also, because of that, packages can’t be delivered on Mondays or Tuesdays (or the day after a holiday) unless you pay extra for overnight shipping.
What Is Spoonful of Comfort?
Based in Utah, Spoonful of Comfort is a woman-owned business that Marti Wymer started in 2008 after she sent soup care packages to her mother while she battled cancer. Together with her business partners, they strive to honor Marti’s mother by putting together beautiful care packages for their customers’ loved ones across the country and by uplifting the recipients in their time of need.
In addition to striving for excellence in their food offerings, Spoonful of Comfort is dedicated to sustainability efforts, and they clearly put a lot of thought into their packaging. Their products are packaged in the most sturdy, beautiful cardboard that can actually be flipped inside out to create beautiful storage or mailing boxes. (They are so sturdy that it pains a chronic box keeper like myself to recycle them!)
The plastic soup containers come inside a shiny insulation bag with small frozen gel packs to keep the soup cold. The containers themselves can be washed and reused, and the bonnet on top of each soup container is a special paper that can be washed and reused to stop food from splattering inside the microwave. The insulation bag can be reused to keep food cold coming home from the market or grocery store, and the gel packs can be re-frozen and reused in coolers or lunch bags!
I’ve not had to contact Spoonful of Comfort’s customer service, but from my experience with them thus far, I have a feeling they would be easy to work with and willing to help!
Review of Spoonful of Comfort Soup Package
I ordered a Build Your Own Soup Package with the chili and mac and cheese combo. For bread, I selected the standard bacci rolls, and I picked the ginger spice cookies after trying those a few months prior (more on the cookie care package I ordered below). My order shipped the next day (about 12 hours after I ordered, I got a shipping notification), and I received it two days later, on a Saturday.
I opened the package to the silver ladle that’s included with all soup packages along with the note I wrote for myself (all packages come with a personal note for the recipient). I was so impressed by how well everything fit into the box so perfectly! Plus, as I mentioned earlier, all of the packaging is so well-made and it was slightly painful to recycle the boxes haha.
The beef chili and mac and cheese came in two separate 32-ounce plastic containers tucked inside an insulated bag with frozen gel packs, so they were extremely cold and probably would have been fine had my package been delayed. The rolls and cookies came wrapped in plastic bags and placed in their own boxes. Each package comes with six rolls and six cookies.
It was super easy to heat up the chili and the mac in two separate pots. (Instructions on how to warm them up are included!) We tried to eat it all in one night but it was a lot of food, so I ended up having to save some for the next day. I photographed the chili and mac after heating it up (and before I seasoned the mac; see photo below).
Everything tasted SO good! The chili was comforting and well-seasoned, and the mac was rich and creamy. I loved dipping the roll in the chili. And, of course, the ginger spice cookie is my favorite—read more on that in my cookie care package review below! After enjoying a Spoonful of Comfort meal myself, I now feel much more confident about continuing to order it for friends and family.
My soup package cost $100 with no “extra care” add-ons plus $10 for shipping, so it’s definitely not inexpensive, but they really do put a lot of effort into the menu, ingredients, flavors, and presentation. Sign up for their newsletter or keep an eye on the site for discounts, especially around the holiday season!
Order your own Spoonful of Comfort soup package! Gluten-free soup packages and vegan soup packages are also available.
Review of Spoonful of Comfort Cookie Package
Before I ordered my soup care package, over the holidays I ordered the cookies and cocoa for two package for Korri and myself with candy cane and ginger spice cookies. This $65 package also included two hot cocoa stir sticks, two snowflake-shaped marshmallow cocoa toppers, and two metal mugs. (This package is only offered seasonally.)
It was this order that made me realize how much I loved the flavor of the ginger spice cookies (and why I ordered them again with my soup package)! I definitely liked the ginger spice more than the candy cane. I typically like peppermint flavored things, but the candy cane cookies (crushed candy cane in a sugar cookie base) were a little stale for me, and I could have used more of the peppermint flavor and less sugar cookie flavor. The ginger spice, on the other hand, were delicious and chewy and so good! (I also ordered ginger spice for someone else and they raved about them!)
Unfortunately, the cocoa that came in the cookies and cocoa care package was not as memorable; hot cocoa is more my thing than Korri’s, and I don’t really remember much about it! The hot cocoa stir sticks are basically just a chunk of chocolate at the end of a stick, and you mix it into hot water or milk. The mugs are not microwave safe (because they’re metal) or dishwasher safe, and they seemed kind of cheap for how expensive the package was, so I would recommend skipping the cocoa part and just opting for a regular cookie package! They start at $40 for one dozen (up to 2 flavors) or $50 for two dozen (up to 4 flavors).
