Solstice at the Spiral Jetty
Korri and I spent our summer solstice meandering through southern Idaho and northern Utah on our way to Salt Lake City for the weekend. Our last stop of the day was to the Spiral Jetty, an earthwork sculpture created by Robert Smithson located on a remote northern shore of the Great Salt Lake. This famous piece of “land art” consists of over 6,000 tons of basalt rock, salt, and sand found at the site. It’s 15' wide and juts 1500’ into the lake. In years past, the Spiral Jetty has been completely covered by the lake, but in recent years, drought has exposed the jetty. You have to take a nearly 16-mile dirt road to get there. Let’s just say that I’m very glad my car held up!
I lived in Utah for a few years for grad school and never made it out to see the jetty, so I’m very happy we finally made it! As luck would have it, we visited on one of the coldest days so far this summer. Gotta love when the summer solstice is chillier than the days around it! ;) It was about 60°F, which was chilly but not terrible, but the wind over the lake made it feel ten times colder…it was blowing at 20-30 mph! I picked an outfit that would look fine in the wind, but I wasn’t anticipating it to be that windy. I probably (definitely) flashed the other folks there…
I actually ended up wearing this outfit all day. I don’t normally travel in skirts, but this one is flexible around the midsection, soft, and so comfortable. I topped it with my ribbed crop tee; the long-sleeves added much-needed warmth. I added the sandals for ease and knowing that the jetty would have sand, and sandals fit the “scene” the best in my opinion. I did almost slip/trip a couple of times walking down to the jetty, though, haha. I don’t wear sandals while driving, though. When I drive long distances, I wear secure shoes, like sneakers or my old Toms, because I like having the stability.
We had so much fun taking the scenic route for once! It was way better than sitting behind a computer working all day. How did you spend your summer solstice?
