Why I'm taking a break from jewelry
You may have noticed that I've been wearing little to no jewelry in my outfits this winter. I used to feel like I needed to add either earrings or a necklace (rarely both, and I don't wear rings or bracelets) to complete a look, but lately I've been avoiding jewelry altogether and I can't really pinpoint why other than the fact that I have enjoyed creating interesting outfits that don't necessarily need jewelry to feel complete. I used to wear either a pair of earrings or a necklace every day, and now I go days without either. (In previous years, I wore my statement pieces more in the winter, but I found that cozy winter scarves don't mesh well with jewelry: statement earrings get in the way, and scarves cover necklaces.)
Instead of jewelry, I've been playing a bit more with layers, texture, and color to keep my outfits interesting. Take this outfit for example. I knew I wanted to wear this coat and my Charlotte Olympia 'Kitty' flats together because they're both navy and I'm nothing if not matchy-matchy. Instead of wearing regular denim (because I didn't want the look to be completely blue), I went for my white skinny jeans. I debated between a grey sweater and this blush pink cashmere beauty, but I'm glad I went with the latter. Grey would have been the obvious choice, and I'm trying to be more playful. Blush pink keeps the base of the outfit light so the navy pieces really stand out. The velvet shoes add a little extra texture that's a bit more fun than regular leather flats. I love how the finished look is simple but still striking. :)
We'll see how long this lasts, but for now, I've decided to embrace my desire to wear less jewelry!
