All In on Monochrome

How to wear a monochromatic outfit for winter — Cotton Cashmere Cat Hair

I’m back with yet another monochrome outfit. Once I start, I just can’t stop! I actually polled you on Instagram stories wanting your thoughts on the color palette; this whiskey cashmere crew is a new addition from Everlane, and I wanted to see it paired with the ochre wide leg crop pants. I wasn’t quite sure if I liked the colors together, and I’m still not sure now. I don’t know color undertones and things well enough but something just seems a little off with these two colors. What do you think?

Monochrome Brown

Differing shades of brown aside, I love a good brown + black color combination. (I know I write a lot about color combinations. They’re basically my #1 consideration when getting dressed! I’m all about making sure the colors I wear go together as perfectly as possible.) I may technically be breaking some sort of archaic “fashion rule” that states brown and black can’t be worn together, but IDC! I’m also borderline petite and wearing wide leg pants, so come at me, fashion bro(s).

In this outfit, the black belt and black ankle boots contrast with and ground the monochrome brown, and I specifically chose these boots because of the wood heel, which plays off of the other brown items. As a whole, the outfit feels continuous and complete, even without a third piece! (Typically a third piece is another layer on top—a cardigan, jacket, blazer, coat, etc.) I added my gold hoops to go with the gold belt buckle. It all ties together and that makes me very happy!

I’m not quite sure I’d wear this sweater and pants combo again in the future (maybe? …never say never, I suppose!), but I know I’ll play around more with monochrome outfits, and as a whole I definitely don’t hate this outfit. Part of the fun of getting dressed is combining different colors, textures, and silhouettes, and sometimes an outfit doesn’t work out for one reason or another but making that realization gets you that much closer to figuring out what it is you DO like to wear! I highly recommend documenting when that realization happens for you. It doesn’t have to be in public blog form like me (haha oh man, there are some outfit fails I’ve worn over the years), but it helps so much to keep that information in mind and writing it down somewhere will help! If you document or track your outfits, making a note in the outfit itself is a great way to do that.
